Miniature horses became a part of our life in 1986. On a shopping trip with our 4H club, we purchased Stoney Ridge Midnight’s Starlight. She was part of a dispersal, and we ended up taking her home for $150. Midnight was a 36” replica of our black Morgan mare; her movement and attitude were breathtaking. After our move to California we broke her to drive and spent countless hours enjoying trail drives, plus our children all learned to ride on her—she willingly ponied off our full size horses or jumped into the back of the minivan to head to the stable for riding lessons. She was bred to Bronco Billy in 1989 and to a Bronco Billy son in 1994, giving us our 2 foundation mares, Stoney Ridge Desert Rose and SR Desert Sun. We lost her in 1996 to Oleander poisoning, but her daughters and granddaughters have given us 20 years of companionship, victories, as well as education for hundreds of people, especially school children.
Our focus is driving and performance, and the belief nothing goes better with minis than children. Our minis have been active participants in 4H and Pony Club, and over the years Dr. Pam and her “Youth Team” have garnered hundreds of ribbons and multiple National Top 10 awards. All 3 of our children have been involved with the horses, Melissa as a groom and manager, Chris in the show ring and as club announcer, and Patty in the ring and as a breed ambassador both in AMHR and ADS. We are so proud of all of you!
We have been Stoney Ridge Ranch for 20 years, taking our name from our first ranch in California set in the steep rocky foothills. As the kids are moving on to new vistas and we have relocated to Texas, Mike and Pam are changing focus from the show arena and will be producing our fabulous performance horses on a limited basis. You can still find us at a limited number of AMHR shows, but we are shifting our endeavors towards ADS competitions, especially Combined Driving. |
